A Generation That Owns Their Faith…
The HBC Student Ministry exists for the sole purpose of graduating students who “Own Their Faith.” Richard Dunn says in his book, Shaping the Spiritual Lives of Students, “North American youth attempt to explore spiritual meaning in the midst of what has been termed a “postmodern” culture. In this culture climate, biblical teaching on God and Jesus, sin and salvation, heaven and hell are increasingly treated as naïve, antiquated theological ideas.” The element of faith is not needed in a student’s life. Students are relying on experiences to get them through each day. They are self-absorbed in a “me-centered” world worried about what everyone else is thinking and saying about them, that there is no time or need for Jesus in the mix. Opening their drama filled lives up on MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and every other cyber cite their connected to, fills their need to connect in relationships, at least for that moment, and certainly leaves no room for one with Jesus.
I believe its time for a ministry to stand in the gap of what some call the impossible. Its time for Student Ministry to be more than fun and games and to get to its task of partnering with parents to shape this generation into who God has called them to become! Its time for Students to stop standing on the “faith” of their parents and grandparents and begin a faith relationship of their own with Jesus Christ! Discipleship is key if we are going to equip generation “X” with a lasting faith beyond their High School years. The Leaders of The HBC Student Ministry stand ready to walk with each student who will allow us to go through the ups and downs of the Christian Life. Every event, activity and Bible study is designed to produce one thing; cross-focused followers of Jesus Christ who are fully devoted to loving God, maturing in the image of Christ and sharing their faith.
